Bentley MicroStation

CAD and modelling platform for infrastructure design, and the file format the rest of Bentley runs on

As of 31 August 2026, Bentley MicroStation starts at $2284/year. MicroStation is Bentley Systems' general CAD application and the DGN modelling engine underneath OpenRoads, OpenBuildings and the rest of the Open products. Softwr lists it under CAD. Bentley MicroStation is made by Bentley Systems, Incorporated, available on Windows.

Overview

What Bentley MicroStation does

MicroStation is a 2D and 3D design application from Bentley Systems, built around the DGN file format. It handles drafting, solid and surface modelling, parametric components, point cloud and reality mesh referencing, rendering, and drawing production. It is also the platform layer for Bentley's discipline applications, so an OpenRoads or OpenBuildings user is running MicroStation with an application layer on top. The commercial fact that matters is file format politics. Large transport agencies, notably state DOTs in the United States and several national highway and rail authorities, standardise on DGN and issue workspaces, seed files and CAD standards that assume MicroStation. If you are bidding on that work, DWG translation is not good enough, because the deliverable is checked against the agency workspace. That captive demand is why MicroStation survives at a price well above mainstream CAD despite a far smaller installed base. Buyers are civil, transport, utility and plant engineering firms, plus the agencies themselves. The trade-off is ecosystem lock: licences are sold through Bentley's own channels with a licensing model that historically metered overuse and billed for it after the fact, the learning curve for AccuDraw and the reference file system is steep for anyone trained on AutoCAD, and the wider consultant and contractor market you exchange files with mostly does not run it.

What people use it for

  • A civil consultancy bidding on state DOT or national highways work that mandates DGN deliverables and issues a MicroStation workspace
  • A rail or utility owner-operator maintaining decades of legacy DGN drawings that would lose data in a DWG round trip
  • An engineering firm standardising on OpenRoads or OpenBuildings, which require the MicroStation platform underneath
  • A survey or asset team draping design geometry over point clouds and reality meshes for existing-conditions work

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Bentley MicroStation.

  • Bentley licensing has a history of usage-based true-ups, where running the software beyond your entitlement is permitted at the time and invoiced later, so finance teams get bills nobody in the design office authorised.
  • It is Windows only, with no macOS or Linux build and no browser client, which rules it out for studios that have standardised on Mac hardware.
  • The user base is far smaller than AutoCAD's, so hiring a MicroStation operator is harder and slower in most markets and contract staff command a premium.
  • Value depends almost entirely on whether your clients mandate DGN; outside infrastructure and government work you are paying several times the price of mainstream CAD for a format nobody asks you for.
  • Agency workspaces, seed files and configuration variables make deployment a specialist job, and a firm working for several agencies ends up maintaining multiple incompatible configurations.

Virtuoso Subscription

$2,284 /yr

  • Single-user MicroStation licence
  • Bentley Keys redeemable for training, mentoring or consulting
  • Bought through Bentley's eStore with a card
  • No procurement contract needed

Practitioner or Enterprise licence

On request

  • Term or perpetual licence sold direct by Bentley
  • Perpetual purchase requires an ongoing SELECT maintenance subscription
  • Volume and enterprise agreements with pooled licence usage
  • Regional list prices vary, so a European or Asian quote will not match the US eStore figure

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Can MicroStation open and save DWG files?

Yes, it edits DWG natively rather than importing it. Fidelity is good but not perfect on complex dynamic blocks and some annotation styles, so a DWG-mandated deliverable is still safer produced in AutoCAD.

Is there still a perpetual licence?

Yes, Bentley still sells perpetual licences alongside term and Virtuoso subscriptions, but a perpetual licence needs an annual SELECT subscription to receive updates and support, so it is not a one-off cost.

Do I need MicroStation if I have OpenRoads Designer?

No. The Open products include the MicroStation platform, so buying both separately is duplicate spend.

What is a Bentley Key?

A prepaid token bundled with a Virtuoso subscription that you redeem for training, mentoring or consulting hours. Unused keys are a real cost if nobody in the team books the sessions.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Bentley MicroStation, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish.
