Bentley MicroStation vs MicroSurvey CAD

Bentley MicroStation
CAD
CAD and modelling platform for infrastructure design, and the file format the rest of Bentley runs on
- From
- $2284/year
- Rated
- -

MicroSurvey CAD
CAD
Survey drafting and COGO on an IntelliCAD engine, sold outright rather than by subscription
- From
- $2945/one-time

The short version
- Each has a real cost: Bentley MicroStation bentley licensing has a history of usage-based true-ups, where running the software beyond your entitlement is permitted at the time and invoiced later, so finance teams get bills nobody in the design office authorised.; MicroSurvey CAD dWG compatibility is file-level, not feature-level, so Civil 3D corridors, pipe networks and other object-enabled entities do not arrive intact and collaboration with engineering consultants remains awkward
- They diverge on capability: Bentley MicroStation covers DGN modelling, MicroSurvey CAD covers Coordinate geometry.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Bentley MicroStation
- A civil consultancy bidding on state DOT or national highways work that mandates DGN deliverables and issues a MicroStation workspacenot MicroSurvey CAD
- A rail or utility owner-operator maintaining decades of legacy DGN drawings that would lose data in a DWG round tripnot MicroSurvey CAD
- An engineering firm standardising on OpenRoads or OpenBuildings, which require the MicroStation platform underneathnot MicroSurvey CAD
- A survey or asset team draping design geometry over point clouds and reality meshes for existing-conditions worknot MicroSurvey CAD
MicroSurvey CAD
- A boundary surveying practice that wants to reduce field data, adjust the traverse and write the legal description in one packagenot Bentley MicroStation
- A firm that refuses to pay an AutoCAD subscription but must deliver DWG files clients can opennot Bentley MicroStation
- A survey office standardised on Leica total stations that wants instrument data flowing in without a translation stepnot Bentley MicroStation
- A two-person practice with irregular workload that wants to own its software outright rather than lose access if it stops payingnot Bentley MicroStation
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Bentley MicroStation
- Bentley licensing has a history of usage-based true-ups, where running the software beyond your entitlement is permitted at the time and invoiced later, so finance teams get bills nobody in the design office authorised.
- It is Windows only, with no macOS or Linux build and no browser client, which rules it out for studios that have standardised on Mac hardware.
- The user base is far smaller than AutoCAD's, so hiring a MicroStation operator is harder and slower in most markets and contract staff command a premium.
- Value depends almost entirely on whether your clients mandate DGN; outside infrastructure and government work you are paying several times the price of mainstream CAD for a format nobody asks you for.
- Agency workspaces, seed files and configuration variables make deployment a specialist job, and a firm working for several agencies ends up maintaining multiple incompatible configurations.
MicroSurvey CAD
- DWG compatibility is file-level, not feature-level, so Civil 3D corridors, pipe networks and other object-enabled entities do not arrive intact and collaboration with engineering consultants remains awkward
- Only one price is listed publicly, for the floating network licence, and the differences between the Standard, Premium and Ultimate editions are resolved through a reseller conversation rather than a published comparison
- It is Windows only and the installed base is concentrated in North America, so support, training material and experienced staff are much harder to find elsewhere
- IntelliCAD lags AutoCAD on newer drawing format features and on third party plug-in availability, so a firm depending on a specific AutoCAD add-in will not find an equivalent
- MicroSurvey now sits inside Hexagon alongside Leica Geosystems, which means the product competes for investment with a much larger portfolio, and buyers of a perpetual licence should ask about the release cadence commitment before assuming years of updates

Questions people ask
- Is Bentley MicroStation or MicroSurvey CAD better?
- Neither clearly leads. Bentley MicroStation starts at $2284/year and MicroSurvey CAD at $2945/one-time, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Bentley MicroStation or MicroSurvey CAD?
- Bentley MicroStation starts at $2284/year and MicroSurvey CAD at $2945/one-time.
- Does Bentley MicroStation or MicroSurvey CAD run on more platforms?
- Both run on Windows, so platform support will not decide this one for you.
- What is Bentley MicroStation best used for?
- Bentley MicroStation is most often used for a civil consultancy bidding on state dot or national highways work that mandates dgn deliverables and issues a microstation workspace, a rail or utility owner-operator maintaining decades of legacy dgn drawings that would lose data in a dwg round trip, an engineering firm standardising on openroads or openbuildings, which require the microstation platform underneath, a survey or asset team draping design geometry over point clouds and reality meshes for existing-conditions work. Of those, a civil consultancy bidding on state dot or national highways work that mandates dgn deliverables and issues a microstation workspace and a rail or utility owner-operator maintaining decades of legacy dgn drawings that would lose data in a dwg round trip are not what MicroSurvey CAD is typically brought in for.
- What can Bentley MicroStation do that MicroSurvey CAD cannot?
- Bentley MicroStation covers DGN modelling, DWG editing, Reality modelling, Parametric components. MicroSurvey CAD covers Coordinate geometry, Traverse adjustment, Field data reduction, IntelliCAD drafting.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Bentley MicroStation: Can MicroStation open and save DWG files?
Yes, it edits DWG natively rather than importing it. Fidelity is good but not perfect on complex dynamic blocks and some annotation styles, so a DWG-mandated deliverable is still safer produced in AutoCAD.
MicroSurvey CAD: Do I need AutoCAD to run it?
No. It is built on the IntelliCAD engine and reads and writes DWG natively without an Autodesk licence.
Bentley MicroStation: Is there still a perpetual licence?
Yes, Bentley still sells perpetual licences alongside term and Virtuoso subscriptions, but a perpetual licence needs an annual SELECT subscription to receive updates and support, so it is not a one-off cost.
MicroSurvey CAD: Is it a perpetual licence or a subscription?
Perpetual. The listed 2,945 US dollar licence includes one year of maintenance and support, after which maintenance is optional.
Bentley MicroStation: Do I need MicroStation if I have OpenRoads Designer?
No. The Open products include the MicroStation platform, so buying both separately is duplicate spend.
MicroSurvey CAD: Who owns MicroSurvey?
Hexagon, the same group that owns Leica Geosystems.
Bentley MicroStation: What is a Bentley Key?
A prepaid token bundled with a Virtuoso subscription that you redeem for training, mentoring or consulting hours. Unused keys are a real cost if nobody in the team books the sessions.
MicroSurvey CAD: Will Civil 3D drawings open correctly?
The geometry will. Civil 3D object data such as corridors and pipe networks will not come through as editable objects.
