What Affinity Publisher does

Affinity Publisher is a desktop application for page layout: master pages, facing pages, text flow across linked frames, tables, footnotes, baseline grids, CMYK and spot colour workflows, preflight checks and press ready PDF export. Since the 2025 relaunch it is delivered as part of a single unified Affinity application that combines the layout, vector and photo editing tools, so the persistent switch between Publisher, Designer and Photo happens inside one program rather than across three licences. The fact that changes a shortlist is ownership and price. Canva acquired Serif in 2024, and the 2025 relaunch made the application free for everyone rather than a one-time purchase. Against a monthly InDesign subscription that removes the licence line from a studio budget entirely. In exchange the roadmap now belongs to a company whose main business is browser based template design, sign-in and account handling run through Canva, and the artificial intelligence extras are the part reserved for paid Canva plans. Studios that bought perpetual version 2 licences got a product that was subsequently given away, which is worth remembering when judging how future changes may land. Buyers are freelancers, small studios, in-house marketing teams and print buyers who need real typographic and prepress control without a subscription. The trade-off is interchange: the print industry still runs on InDesign files, and Affinity cannot open them.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Affinity Publisher.

It cannot open native InDesign documents, only IDML exports, so inherited client archives either come across imperfectly or have to be rebuilt from scratch.
There is no scripting or plugin interface, so studios that automate catalogue or variable data production still need InDesign alongside it.
Signing in through a Canva account is now part of using the free application, which is a problem for regulated or offline environments that forbid cloud accounts.
The roadmap belongs to Canva, and the 2025 relaunch already reset the licence model that earlier perpetual buyers paid for, so long-term direction is outside your control.
Commercial printers and freelance collaborators still expect InDesign packages, so handoff usually means delivering flattened PDFs rather than editable files.
