Cilium

eBPF-based networking, observability and security for Kubernetes

The short version
- Each has a real cost: VictoriaMetrics promQL compatibility is very close but not identical, and MetricsQL extensions do not port back; Cilium requires a recent Linux kernel, which rules out older distributions and some managed environments
- They diverge on capability: VictoriaMetrics covers PromQL compatible, Cilium covers eBPF datapath.
Where they differ
Only the attributes on which VictoriaMetrics and Cilium actually diverge.
| Attribute | VictoriaMetrics | Cilium |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Self-hosted | Kubernetes, Linux |
Identical on both: starting price (Free), pricing model (Open source, no licence fee), free tier (Yes), user rating (Not yet rated), category (Cloud).
What each one covers
Drawn from each product's published feature list. An absence here means we hold no record of it - not that the product lacks it.
Only in VictoriaMetrics
- PromQL compatible
- Low resource use
- Single binary or cluster
- Remote write target
Only in Cilium
- eBPF datapath
- Identity-based policy
- Hubble observability
- Sidecar-free mesh
What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
VictoriaMetrics
- Keeping months or years of Prometheus metrics without the memory costnot Cilium
- High-cardinality metrics where Prometheus strugglesnot Cilium
- Consolidating metrics from many Prometheus instances into one queryable storenot Cilium
Cilium
- Kubernetes networking at a scale where iptables-based CNI performance degradesnot VictoriaMetrics
- Network policy expressed on workload identity rather than fragile IP rulesnot VictoriaMetrics
- Seeing which services actually talk to each other, and what policy is droppingnot VictoriaMetrics
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
VictoriaMetrics
- PromQL compatibility is very close but not identical, and MetricsQL extensions do not port back
- Smaller community than Prometheus, so fewer guides and third-party integrations
- The clustered version has meaningfully more moving parts than the single binary suggests
- Some enterprise features sit outside the open-source offering
Cilium
- Requires a recent Linux kernel, which rules out older distributions and some managed environments
- eBPF is genuinely hard to debug when it misbehaves, and the skill is rare on most teams
- Broad scope — CNI, policy, mesh, observability — means the learning curve covers several domains at once

Questions people ask
- Is VictoriaMetrics or Cilium better?
- Neither clearly leads. VictoriaMetrics starts at Free and Cilium at Free, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, VictoriaMetrics or Cilium?
- VictoriaMetrics starts at Free and Cilium at Free.
- Does VictoriaMetrics or Cilium run on more platforms?
- VictoriaMetrics runs on Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Self-hosted. Cilium runs on Kubernetes, Linux.
- Can I use VictoriaMetrics for free?
- Both have a free tier, so you can try either at no cost before committing.
- What is VictoriaMetrics best used for?
- VictoriaMetrics is most often used for keeping months or years of prometheus metrics without the memory cost, high-cardinality metrics where prometheus struggles, consolidating metrics from many prometheus instances into one queryable store. Of those, keeping months or years of prometheus metrics without the memory cost and high-cardinality metrics where prometheus struggles are not what Cilium is typically brought in for.
- What can VictoriaMetrics do that Cilium cannot?
- VictoriaMetrics covers PromQL compatible, Low resource use, Single binary or cluster, Remote write target. Cilium covers eBPF datapath, Identity-based policy, Hubble observability, Sidecar-free mesh.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
VictoriaMetrics: Is VictoriaMetrics free?
The open-source version is free with no data limits. An enterprise edition and cloud service are paid.
Cilium: Is Cilium free?
Yes, open source and CNCF-graduated. Isovalent sells an enterprise distribution and support.
VictoriaMetrics: Does it replace Prometheus?
It can, but most teams keep Prometheus for scraping and use VictoriaMetrics as the long-term store behind it.
Cilium: What does eBPF change?
It lets Cilium run packet-processing programs inside the kernel instead of relying on iptables rule chains, which behave poorly as the number of services grows.
VictoriaMetrics: Is PromQL fully supported?
Very nearly. It implements PromQL and extends it with MetricsQL, though a small number of edge-case behaviours differ.
Cilium: Does Cilium replace a service mesh?
It can cover much of what a mesh does without sidecars, though full mesh feature sets still favour Istio or Linkerd.
