- Shipping security fixes ahead of Red Hat means running code Red Hat has not published, which some regulated buyers treat as unvalidated rather than as an advantage.
- No ISV support contract names AlmaLinux, so escalations with database and application vendors can stop at the operating system question.
- Funding is concentrated in CloudLinux and a few cloud sponsors, so the elected board governs a project whose engineering capacity still depends heavily on one company.
- Divergence from RHEL accumulates across a ten-year lifecycle, and the further into a release you are, the harder it becomes to argue that a RHEL test result predicts AlmaLinux behaviour.
openSUSE
- YaST is being retired in favour of Agama and Cockpit, so a decade of tutorials, scripts and administrator habits stop applying at Leap 16 and internal runbooks need rewriting.
- Leap 16 follows SUSE Linux Enterprise 16 in requiring x86-64-v2, which strands older hardware on Leap 15 and forces a hardware decision alongside the upgrade.

Binaries and kernel modules built for RHEL load and run. Package versions, patch sets and hardware support may differ. If your software only calls interfaces, you will notice nothing; if it inspects versions, you might.
openSUSE: Should I run Leap or Tumbleweed?
Tumbleweed for a workstation where you want current packages and will use snapshots. Leap for servers and for anything where you would rather patch quarterly than weekly.
AlmaLinux: Which should I choose between AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux?
Rocky if a third party certifies against exact RHEL package versions or you want the closest possible copy. AlmaLinux if you need older CPU support, faster patches, or a foundation with an elected board.
openSUSE: Is Leap going away?
No, but it changed foundations. Leap 16 is built on SUSE Linux Enterprise 16, drops YaST and raises the CPU baseline. Plan the upgrade as a migration rather than a routine version bump.

More reliable here than elsewhere, because snapshots are gated by openQA and Snapper makes a bad update a boot-menu choice rather than a reinstall. It still requires you to read update notes.
