The short version

  • Only UnoPIM has a free tier, so it costs nothing to try first.

There is no vendor-run cloud option, so somebody has to run PHP 8.4, a supported MariaDB, MySQL or PostgreSQL, and keep them patched.

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

eBay

  • The final value fee applies to the total the buyer pays including postage and tax rather than to the item price, so a low value item with expensive shipping loses a much larger share of its margin than the headline percentage implies.
  • Fees stack rather than substitute, since a Store subscription, a per order fixed fee, Promoted Listings and cross-border percentages all apply on top of the category rate, and the effective take rate is only visible after a full month of settlement reports.
  • eBay controls search placement, so as a category gets competitive the practical cost of visibility becomes the Promoted Listings rate, and that is an auction against other sellers that only goes one way.
  • You do not get the customer relationship, because eBay mediates messaging and does not supply a marketing list, so repeat business depends on eBay showing your listing again rather than on anything you own.
  • The account is the entire asset and it is governed by policies eBay enforces unilaterally, so a suspension or a category restriction ends the revenue immediately with no portable equivalent of a domain, a theme or a customer database to move elsewhere.

UnoPIM

  • Self-hosted. There is no vendor-run cloud option, so somebody has to run PHP 8.4, a supported MariaDB, MySQL or PostgreSQL, and keep them patched.
  • The stack is specific and recent. Laravel 13 on PHP 8.4.1 or newer rules out shared hosting and older managed PHP environments.
  • Younger than the established PIM tools it competes with, first released in 2024, so there is less third-party tooling and a smaller pool of implementers.
  • Support is community-driven unless you buy it from Webkul. The MIT licence carries no SLA.
  • The AI content generation and AI agent chat depend on third-party model providers you supply and pay for separately.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

eBay: What does selling on eBay actually cost?

A category-dependent percentage of the total buyer payment including postage, plus a fixed fee per order, plus any Store subscription, advertising rate and international fees. Model all of them together, not the first one alone.

UnoPIM: Is UnoPIM really free?

Yes. UnoPIM is released under the MIT licence and the source is on GitHub, so there is no licence fee and no seat cost. What you pay for is hosting, and optionally Webkul's commercial support and implementation services.

Source
eBay: Can I use my own payment provider?

No. Payments run through eBay and settle to your bank account on eBay's payout schedule, so you do not choose the processor and you do not control settlement timing.

UnoPIM: What does UnoPIM need to run?

Laravel 13 on PHP 8.4.1 or newer, with MariaDB 10.11 LTS or 11.8 LTS, MySQL 8.0.32 or newer, or PostgreSQL 16. Node 22 LTS is recommended for building assets.

Source
eBay: Do I get my customers' email addresses?

Not for marketing. eBay mediates buyer contact, which is why sellers who rely on it have no list to fall back on if the channel changes.

UnoPIM: How many products can UnoPIM handle?

The project states it is built to manage, enrich and scale product data beyond 10 million products, with performance tuning aimed at high-volume catalogues.

Source
eBay: Is eBay an alternative to having my own store?

It is a channel, not a substitute. Sellers who use it well treat it as demand they rent while building something they own in parallel.

UnoPIM: Who maintains UnoPIM?

Webkul, an e-commerce software company based in Noida, India. The project is open source with an active community and has passed 11,000 GitHub stars.

Source
UnoPIM: Does UnoPIM include digital asset management?

Yes. Images, videos and documents are stored and organised alongside product data with metadata tagging, rather than needing a separate DAM.

Source
UnoPIM: What AI features does it include?

An AI agent chat for managing products conversationally, and AI content generation with support for more than ten model providers. You supply and pay for the provider.
