The short version
- Each has a real cost: Bentley MicroStation bentley licensing has a history of usage-based true-ups, where running the software beyond your entitlement is permitted at the time and invoiced later, so finance teams get bills nobody in the design office authorised.; COMSOL Multiphysics the base licence covers very little on its own and nearly every practical problem needs one or more add-on modules, each priced separately, so the quoted total is typically a multiple of the headline base figure.
- They diverge on capability: Bentley MicroStation covers DGN modelling, COMSOL Multiphysics covers Coupled multiphysics solving.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Bentley MicroStation
- A civil consultancy bidding on state DOT or national highways work that mandates DGN deliverables and issues a MicroStation workspacenot COMSOL Multiphysics
- A rail or utility owner-operator maintaining decades of legacy DGN drawings that would lose data in a DWG round tripnot COMSOL Multiphysics
- An engineering firm standardising on OpenRoads or OpenBuildings, which require the MicroStation platform underneathnot COMSOL Multiphysics
- A survey or asset team draping design geometry over point clouds and reality meshes for existing-conditions worknot COMSOL Multiphysics
COMSOL Multiphysics
- Modelling a device where physics are strongly coupled, such as induction heating that changes material properties which change the fieldnot Bentley MicroStation
- Research work needing custom partial differential equations that no packaged solver in a mainstream tool providesnot Bentley MicroStation
- Packaging a validated model as an app so process engineers can run studies without learning the simulation toolnot Bentley MicroStation
- A department wanting shared concurrent access via a Floating Network Licence, with cluster runs at no extra licence costnot Bentley MicroStation
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Bentley MicroStation
- Bentley licensing has a history of usage-based true-ups, where running the software beyond your entitlement is permitted at the time and invoiced later, so finance teams get bills nobody in the design office authorised.
- It is Windows only, with no macOS or Linux build and no browser client, which rules it out for studios that have standardised on Mac hardware.
- The user base is far smaller than AutoCAD's, so hiring a MicroStation operator is harder and slower in most markets and contract staff command a premium.
- Value depends almost entirely on whether your clients mandate DGN; outside infrastructure and government work you are paying several times the price of mainstream CAD for a format nobody asks you for.
- Agency workspaces, seed files and configuration variables make deployment a specialist job, and a firm working for several agencies ends up maintaining multiple incompatible configurations.
COMSOL Multiphysics
- The base licence covers very little on its own and nearly every practical problem needs one or more add-on modules, each priced separately, so the quoted total is typically a multiple of the headline base figure.
- Perpetual licences renew maintenance at 20% of the then-current price each year, and because that percentage applies to the whole module stack the annual bill grows as your module list does and as list prices rise.
- No pricing at all is published, so procurement cannot benchmark or budget without a sales engagement, and comparisons against Ansys or SolidWorks Simulation are effectively impossible before that point.
- Named Single-User and CPU-locked licences do not share, so a team of six that bought individual licences ends up with idle seats while a Floating Network Licence would have covered them, and switching licence type is a commercial renegotiation.
- Solving strongly coupled systems is memory hungry and slow, and models that look modest in the GUI routinely need tens of gigabytes of RAM, so hardware cost is a real and often underestimated part of adoption.

Questions people ask
- Is Bentley MicroStation or COMSOL Multiphysics better?
- Neither clearly leads. Bentley MicroStation starts at $2284/year and COMSOL Multiphysics at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Bentley MicroStation or COMSOL Multiphysics?
- Bentley MicroStation starts at $2284/year and COMSOL Multiphysics at On request.
- Does Bentley MicroStation or COMSOL Multiphysics run on more platforms?
- Bentley MicroStation runs on Windows. COMSOL Multiphysics runs on Windows, Linux, macOS.
- What is Bentley MicroStation best used for?
- Bentley MicroStation is most often used for a civil consultancy bidding on state dot or national highways work that mandates dgn deliverables and issues a microstation workspace, a rail or utility owner-operator maintaining decades of legacy dgn drawings that would lose data in a dwg round trip, an engineering firm standardising on openroads or openbuildings, which require the microstation platform underneath, a survey or asset team draping design geometry over point clouds and reality meshes for existing-conditions work. Of those, a civil consultancy bidding on state dot or national highways work that mandates dgn deliverables and issues a microstation workspace and a rail or utility owner-operator maintaining decades of legacy dgn drawings that would lose data in a dwg round trip are not what COMSOL Multiphysics is typically brought in for.
- What can Bentley MicroStation do that COMSOL Multiphysics cannot?
- Bentley MicroStation covers DGN modelling, DWG editing, Reality modelling, Parametric components. COMSOL Multiphysics covers Coupled multiphysics solving, Equation-based modelling, Add-on module library, Application Builder.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Bentley MicroStation: Can MicroStation open and save DWG files?
Yes, it edits DWG natively rather than importing it. Fidelity is good but not perfect on complex dynamic blocks and some annotation styles, so a DWG-mandated deliverable is still safer produced in AutoCAD.
COMSOL Multiphysics: Does the base licence include CFD or structural mechanics?
Only limited capability. Serious CFD, structural, RF and acoustics work each require the relevant add-on module at extra cost.
Bentley MicroStation: Is there still a perpetual licence?
Yes, Bentley still sells perpetual licences alongside term and Virtuoso subscriptions, but a perpetual licence needs an annual SELECT subscription to receive updates and support, so it is not a one-off cost.
COMSOL Multiphysics: What does maintenance cost?
Perpetual licences include 12 months of updates and support, then renew at 20% of the then-current price per year.
Bentley MicroStation: Do I need MicroStation if I have OpenRoads Designer?
No. The Open products include the MicroStation platform, so buying both separately is duplicate spend.
COMSOL Multiphysics: Which licence type should a team buy?
Floating Network if more than a couple of people use it, since it shares concurrency and includes cluster and cloud computing at no extra charge.
Bentley MicroStation: What is a Bentley Key?
A prepaid token bundled with a Virtuoso subscription that you redeem for training, mentoring or consulting hours. Unused keys are a real cost if nobody in the team books the sessions.
COMSOL Multiphysics: Is pricing published?
No. COMSOL publishes licence types but no prices; every purchase goes through a quote.
