  • The October 2024 Certara acquisition ended two decades of vendor neutrality, and organisations that embedded JChem precisely because Chemaxon competed with nobody now depend on a component owned by a company that sells into their accounts.
  • Licensing is genuinely complicated, with different terms for named users, servers, desktop applications and embedded redistribution, so working out what you are allowed to deploy usually requires a conversation rather than reading a document.
  • The free academic package is granted for two-year terms and covers education rather than research, so a research group that assumed it was free discovers it needs a paid commercial academic licence.
  • Nothing is priced publicly for commercial use, so a team evaluating Chemaxon against open source alternatives such as RDKit cannot compare total cost without entering a sales process.
  • Open source cheminformatics has closed much of the functional gap for basic structure handling and search, so the commercial case increasingly rests on prediction quality, support and registration workflows rather than on capability that cannot be obtained elsewhere.

REDCap

  • A for-profit company cannot hold a licence or self-host REDCap, so a biotech or CRO that liked it at university simply cannot deploy it the same way and must buy a commercially licensed hosted version instead.
  • Because each institution hosts its own instance, support, uptime, backup and version currency vary by university, and a researcher has no recourse to Vanderbilt when the local instance is two years out of date.
  • It is free of licence fee but not free of cost: the hosting institution carries server, security, patching and support staffing, which is why some institutions charge internal recharges per project.
  • Validation for regulated use is the deploying institution responsibility, so an instance is not Part 11 compliant simply because REDCap supports the features; someone locally has to produce and maintain the evidence.

No. It has been a subsidiary of Certara since October 2024. The products continue under the Chemaxon name.

REDCap: Is REDCap really free?

The licence is free to non-profit institutions and government organisations that join the consortium, but they must host and support it themselves, so there is real internal cost.

Chemaxon: Is the academic licence really free?
