What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
C3 AI Suite
- A utility with decades of SCADA history wanting failure prediction on transformers without hiring a data science teamnot Petasense
- A defence agency needing an AI platform accredited for classified environments rather than a commercial SaaSnot Petasense
- An oil and gas operator consolidating condition data from OSIsoft PI, SAP and bespoke historians into one modelnot Petasense
- A bank building transaction monitoring where the vendor supplies both the models and the analysts who tune themnot Petasense
Petasense
- A reliability team wanting continuous vibration data on assets currently covered by a quarterly walkaround routenot C3 AI Suite
- A plant with variable frequency drive assets where generic vibration analytics produce too many false alarmsnot C3 AI Suite
- Mixing battery sensors on accessible pumps with wired sensors on the handful of assets that would stop productionnot C3 AI Suite
- A manufacturer with no in-house vibration analyst that wants the analysis delivered as a service rather than as a dashboardnot C3 AI Suite
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
C3 AI Suite
- The commercial model bundles software with heavy professional services, so the licence line in the quote understates the first-year cost by a wide margin and budgets set from the licence alone overrun.
- Applications are written against C3 proprietary types, so nothing built on the platform ports to a generic Spark or Databricks stack without a rewrite, which makes exit expensive after two or three years.
- Contracts have historically been large multi-year commitments with a small number of very large customers, which means pricing is negotiated case by case and small buyers get little leverage.
- Skills are scarce outside C3 itself, so hiring an engineer who already knows the platform is hard and the customer stays dependent on the vendor for extensions.
- Pre-built applications need substantial configuration against the customer data model before they produce anything, so the marketing claim of a packaged app understates the integration work by months.
Petasense
- Petasense is now owned by AssetWatch, whose business is monitoring delivered as a managed service, so a buyer wanting self-service software should get the delivery model written into the contract rather than assume it.
- Hardware is required per measurement point and gateways are required per area, so the up-front capital for a plant-wide deployment is substantial and separate from the subscription.
- Per-asset subscription pricing scales linearly, which makes full coverage of a large population of low-value motors uneconomic compared with route-based monitoring.
- Nothing is published on sensor cost, subscription rate, gateway requirements or contract length, so a total cost of ownership figure requires a full sales engagement before you can compare it against anything.
- Battery-powered wireless sensors trade measurement richness for battery life, so the sampling rate and resolution are lower than a wired analyser would give, which limits diagnosis of high-frequency bearing defects on critical machines.

Questions people ask
- Is C3 AI Suite or Petasense better?
- Neither clearly leads. C3 AI Suite starts at On request and Petasense at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, C3 AI Suite or Petasense?
- C3 AI Suite starts at On request and Petasense at On request.
- Does C3 AI Suite or Petasense run on more platforms?
- C3 AI Suite runs on Web, Linux. Petasense runs on Web, Cloud, iOS, Android.
- What is C3 AI Suite best used for?
- C3 AI Suite is most often used for a utility with decades of scada history wanting failure prediction on transformers without hiring a data science team, a defence agency needing an ai platform accredited for classified environments rather than a commercial saas, an oil and gas operator consolidating condition data from osisoft pi, sap and bespoke historians into one model, a bank building transaction monitoring where the vendor supplies both the models and the analysts who tune them. Of those, a utility with decades of scada history wanting failure prediction on transformers without hiring a data science team and a defence agency needing an ai platform accredited for classified environments rather than a commercial saas are not what Petasense is typically brought in for.
- What can C3 AI Suite do that Petasense cannot?
- C3 AI Suite covers Type system, Pre-built applications, Model lifecycle, C3 Generative AI. Petasense covers Vibration Mote, Transmitter range, ARO cloud, VFD-specific monitoring.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
C3 AI Suite: Does C3 publish pricing?
No. Everything is quoted, and the shape of the deal, pilot then subscription, means the first number you see is for a proof of value rather than the platform.
Petasense: Is Petasense still a separate product?
Yes. It trades under its own name with its own product line, but the owner since January 2024 is AssetWatch.
C3 AI Suite: Can it run in a classified environment?
Yes. C3 supports air-gapped and government cloud deployments, including FedRAMP-authorised environments, which is a large part of why defence buyers choose it.
Petasense: Do I have to buy Petasense hardware?
Yes. The platform is built around its own Motes and Transmitters; it is not a bring-your-own-sensor analytics product.
C3 AI Suite: Do we own the models we build?
You own the models and the data. The application logic is written in C3 types, so the artefacts are portable in principle and impractical to move in practice.
Petasense: Can I get monitoring as a service?
Yes, through parent AssetWatch, whose model is condition monitoring engineers reviewing your data. Clarify which model your quote covers.
Petasense: How is it priced?
Per monitored asset on subscription, plus sensors and gateways. Nothing is published.
