The short version

  • Each has a real cost: Buildah linux only, with no native macOS or Windows support; esbuild deliberately does not type-check TypeScript, only strips types, so tsc still runs separately
  • They diverge on capability: Buildah covers Daemonless builds, esbuild covers Very fast builds.

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.

Buildah

  • Producing minimal images with tighter layer control than a Dockerfile givesnot esbuild
  • Scripted image assembly where a Dockerfile is the wrong abstractionnot esbuild

esbuild

  • Build pipelines where bundle time is the bottlenecknot Buildah
  • Libraries and tools needing a fast, embeddable bundlernot Buildah
  • Replacing slower bundlers where the plugin ecosystem is not needednot Buildah

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

Buildah

  • Linux only, with no native macOS or Windows support
  • Scriptable builds are powerful but less portable and less familiar than a Dockerfile
  • Narrow by design: it builds images and does not run them, so it needs Podman or another runtime alongside

esbuild

  • Deliberately does not type-check TypeScript, only strips types, so tsc still runs separately
  • Plugin API is far narrower than webpack or Rollup, and complex builds hit its limits
  • Code splitting support has historically lagged the more established bundlers
  • Frequently used indirectly through Vite, so direct use is a narrower need than the download numbers suggest

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

Buildah: Is Buildah free?

Yes, open source with no licence fee.

esbuild: Is esbuild free?

Yes, open source under the MIT licence.

Buildah: Do I still need a Dockerfile?

No. Buildah reads Dockerfiles if you have them, but images can be built entirely from shell commands instead.

esbuild: Does esbuild type-check TypeScript?

No. It strips types for speed and does not check them. Run tsc separately if you need type checking.

Buildah: How is Buildah different from Podman?

Buildah builds images; Podman runs them. Podman actually embeds Buildah for its build command, and the two are designed to be used together.

esbuild: Do I need esbuild if I use Vite?

You already have it. Vite uses esbuild internally for dependency pre-bundling and transforms.
