Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Ardour
- Almost no instruments or sample content ship with it, so a working music production setup needs third-party plugins that in practice cost more than a commercial workstation licence would have.
- ARA is not supported, so Melodyne and similar pitch tools run as offline transfers, and the MIDI editor is behind Cubase, Live and Logic for anything past basic sequencing.
- Support is community forums and a mailing list; there is no vendor with a response commitment, so a facility needing contractual support has to employ that expertise itself.
- Plugin behaviour on Linux is fragmented across LV2, VST2 and VST3 with inconsistent GUI toolkit support, so a plugin working on one distribution is no evidence it will work on another.
- The interface is dense and assumes you already understand signal routing, and the documentation lags the current release, so the first hours are slower than with a commercial workstation.
Renoise
- It is not built for recording a live band; multitrack audio recording is limited, so anyone tracking drums or a full session needs a second application for that stage.
- The tracker interface is a genuine barrier: someone fluent in a piano roll gains no transferable muscle memory, so the first weeks are slower rather than faster.
- There is no notation, no score export and no film scoring workflow, which excludes any work delivered as written music or synced to picture.
- The user base is small, so tutorials, preset packs and hired help are scarce next to any mainstream workstation, and a project cannot be opened by a collaborator who does not own Renoise.
- Development is slow because the team is very small and major releases have historically arrived years apart, so a missing feature may not arrive on any timescale you can plan around.

Ardour: Is Ardour free?
The source is free and GPL licensed. The prebuilt installers are paid, from a small monthly subscription or a single payment of at least 45 US dollars. You can compile it yourself at no cost and legally redistribute the result.
Renoise: What does the demo actually restrict?
Only rendering to an audio file. Everything else including saving projects works, so you can finish a piece before deciding whether to buy.
Ardour: What does the single payment include?
A ready-to-run installer plus updates until the next major version. After that you pay again if you want the new major release as a prebuilt build.
Renoise: Does the licence cover future versions?
Updates within the current major version are included. A new major version is a discounted paid upgrade for existing licence holders.
Ardour: Can an organisation deploy it on many machines without paying per seat?
