What Topaz Photo AI does
Topaz Photo AI replaced the separate DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI and Gigapixel AI applications with one program that inspects a file, proposes noise reduction, sharpening, upscaling and face recovery, and lets you override each. It runs standalone or as a plugin inside Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Capture One and Affinity Photo, and processes raw, TIFF, JPEG and PNG. The licence is the part buyers get wrong. The purchase is perpetual for the version you receive and includes twelve months of updates; after that the application keeps running but stops receiving new models. Since almost all of the value sits in the models rather than the interface, a licence two years past its update window is measurably worse than a current one at the same task, so the renewal is closer to a running cost than an optional extra. It is bought by wedding, event, wildlife and real estate photographers who need usable frames out of high ISO or soft captures, and by anyone enlarging older files for print. The trade-off is that upscaling and detail recovery invent information that was never recorded, which is fine for a portrait and disqualifying for evidence, journalism or scientific imaging.

Is it better than the denoise built into Lightroom?
On heavily noisy raw files the results are close, and Lightroom Denoise costs nothing extra if you already subscribe. Topaz wins mainly on upscaling and on non raw files.
Can it run on Linux?
No. Windows and macOS only, and the macOS build needs a reasonably recent Apple silicon or Intel machine with a discrete GPU to be usable at speed.
