Quartzy manages the parts of lab operations that sit around the science: what is in the freezer, who requested what, where the order is, and what it cost. Researchers submit requests, a lab manager approves them, orders go out to suppliers, and received items land back in the inventory with lot and location detail. It is deliberately lighter than a full LIMS and does not attempt sample workflow, instrument integration or regulated data capture. The commercial structure matters more than the feature list. Quartzy sells subscriptions at USD 50 per month billed annually for an Academia plan covering up to three users, USD 250 per month for an Industry plan covering up to five, and quoted Enterprise pricing for unlimited users. Alongside that it operates the Quartzy Shop, reselling millions of catalogue items and earning margin on what your lab buys. Supplier-funded credits, advertised up to several thousand dollars for new subscribers, come from that relationship. The practical consequence is that the vendor has a financial interest in your purchasing flowing through its own storefront rather than through your institutional procurement contracts, which may already carry negotiated discounts that beat the Shop. Buyers are academic labs and small biotech teams of a handful of scientists who have outgrown a shared spreadsheet. The trade-off is the seat ceiling: three users on Academia and five on Industry are low for a real lab, and crossing either line means a jump to a quoted Enterprise contract rather than an incremental seat charge.
