Overview
PDAL, the Point Data Abstraction Library, is a BSD-licensed C++ library with Python bindings and a command line interface for reading, writing and processing point cloud data. It is deliberately modelled on GDAL: a common abstraction over many formats including LAS, LAZ, E57, PLY, Entwine and various database and cloud stores, plus a pipeline system where stages such as cropping, reprojection, ground classification, outlier removal, noise filtering and rasterisation are composed as JSON. It is worth being clear what this is. There is no graphical interface, no viewer worth speaking of and nothing to buy. PDAL is infrastructure that other software and other people's scripts sit on top of, used inside QGIS, in Entwine and COPC tiling workflows, in national lidar programmes and in cloud processing pipelines that handle terabytes of aerial lidar. If you want to look at a point cloud and click things, PDAL is not that tool and never will be. Development has been led substantially by Hobu Inc, the small US company behind LAZ, COPC and Entwine, funded largely through contracts with agencies such as the US Army Corps of Engineers and USGS rather than by selling licences. That is the fact that matters to a buyer: PDAL is free and stable, but its ongoing development depends on a very small number of contributors and public sector contracts, and paid support means contracting Hobu or a consultancy directly rather than buying a support tier.
