Okteto

Runs production-like development environments on your own Kubernetes cluster

As of 31 August 2026, Okteto is free to use. Okteto puts development environments on the cluster rather than on the laptop, so an application under development talks to real dependencies instead of mocks or a local Kubernetes distribution. Softwr lists it under Developer Tools. Okteto is made by Okteto Inc, available on Linux, macOS, Windows, API.

Overview

What Okteto does

Okteto Inc was founded in 2019, came through Y Combinator in the winter 2019 batch, and is led by Ramiro Berrelleza with co-founders Pablo Chico de Guzman, previously at Docker, and Ramon Lamana. The product installs into a Kubernetes cluster you provide and gives developers namespaced environments that mirror production, with file synchronisation into a running container so code changes appear without rebuilding an image. In 2026 the company repositioned around agentic development, presenting the same environments as the place AI agents build and verify work against real services. The licensing shape is the thing to understand before you evaluate. The okteto/okteto CLI is genuinely Apache-2.0 with around 3,500 stars and active releases, but the README states plainly that the open source version supports only the development section of the Okteto manifest. Build services, user management, environment catalogues and observability are commercial platform features. So the open source component is a client, not a product, and it provides very little insurance if the company stops trading. That matters more than usual here, because the last disclosed funding is a 15 million US dollar Series A announced in February 2022, led by Two Sigma Ventures with Haystack, Root Ventures and Uncorrelated Ventures, and no round has been announced since. Buyers are platform teams at companies already committed to Kubernetes whose developers cannot run the full dependency graph locally. The trade-offs are cost opacity and prerequisites. Only the free Starter tier at five seats publishes anything; Scale and Enterprise are both contact sales, with no currency and no billing period stated anywhere on the pricing page, which makes budgeting impossible without a call. You also supply and pay for the cluster, and its capacity, upgrades and node costs remain your problem on top of the licence.

What people use it for

  • A microservices estate where no developer can run the full dependency graph on a laptop
  • Giving each pull request a working environment reviewers can click rather than describe
  • Letting coding agents build and test against real databases and queues instead of mocks
  • Removing a fleet of local Kubernetes installations that drift from production and produce false test results

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Okteto.

  • Two of the three plans publish no price at all, with no currency and no billing period stated anywhere, so any budget above five seats requires a sales conversation before you can even compare it with an alternative.
  • The Apache-2.0 CLI is restricted to the development section of the manifest, so build services, user management and observability all require the commercial platform and the open licence provides very little continuity insurance.
  • The last disclosed funding round is a 15 million US dollar Series A from February 2022 with nothing announced since, and the contributor base is dominated by company employees, which is concentrated risk for something embedded in every developer daily loop.
  • You must bring and pay for the Kubernetes cluster, so node cost, capacity planning and version upgrades stay with your platform team on top of the licence fee.
  • The 2026 repositioning towards AI agents means the classic developer inner loop is no longer what the marketing leads with, so a buyer purchasing that use case should confirm roadmap commitment rather than assume it.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Okteto open source?

The CLI is Apache-2.0, but the README states it supports only the development section of the manifest. Everything operationally interesting, including builds, user management and observability, is in the commercial platform.

What does it cost?

Only the free Starter tier with five seats is published. Scale and Enterprise are both contact sales, with no price, currency or billing period disclosed on the pricing page.

Do I need my own Kubernetes cluster?

Yes. Okteto installs into a cluster you provide and pay for, so capacity, upgrades and node costs remain your responsibility in addition to the licence.

How is this different from running Kubernetes locally?

Environments run against the same managed databases, queues and service mesh as production, so a class of failures that only appears in a real cluster is caught before merge rather than after deploy.
