Milestone XProtect

Open platform video management software with perpetual per-device licences

As of 1 September 2026, Milestone XProtect has a free plan and paid plans start at $109/one-time. The Canon-owned video management system that supports thousands of camera models from more than a hundred manufacturers. Softwr lists it under Cybersecurity. Milestone XProtect is made by Milestone Systems, a Canon company, available on Windows, Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What Milestone XProtect does

XProtect is Milestone Systems' video management software, and it is the default open platform in enterprise surveillance. Rather than tying you to one camera brand, it supports several thousand device models across more than a hundred manufacturers, and a large third-party integration ecosystem builds access control, analytics, LPR and retail applications on top of it. The editions ladder from Essential+, which is free for up to eight cameras with no recording time limit, through Express+, Professional+ and Expert to Corporate, with each step adding federated architecture, failover recording, edge storage retrieval and evidence handling capability. The licensing model is the thing to understand before budgeting. XProtect device licences are perpetual: you buy the channel once, at published distributor list prices in the region of $109 for Express+, $177 for Professional+ and $282 for Expert per device, rising further for Corporate. Then there is Care Plus, an annual per-device support and software update contract. Perpetual licences without Care Plus continue to run, but they stop receiving version upgrades, which over five years means a camera you cannot add because the current firmware is unsupported by your frozen VMS version. In practice the annual Care Plus renewal is the real recurring cost, not an optional extra, and a thousand-camera site should model it as such. Milestone is owned by Canon and its portfolio now also contains BriefCam video analytics and Arcules cloud video. Milestone Kite, the cloud product sold alongside XProtect, was replaced by Arcules in the portfolio from January 2025, which matters for anyone who bought Kite. XProtect itself is bought by enterprises, cities, transport operators, universities and critical infrastructure sites with hundreds to tens of thousands of cameras. The trade-off is that openness costs effort: XProtect expects a competent integrator, a designed server architecture and a Windows estate to run on, and it is not something a facilities manager configures over a weekend.

What people use it for

  • A city or transport operator running tens of thousands of cameras across federated sites
  • An enterprise with mixed legacy camera brands that refuses to standardise on one manufacturer
  • A critical infrastructure site needing failover recording servers and tamper-evident evidence export
  • An integrator building a bespoke security application on top of an open VMS platform

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Milestone XProtect.

  • Care Plus is presented as optional but is not in practice: without it, perpetual licences stop receiving version upgrades and eventually you cannot add a current camera because your frozen version does not support it.
  • Per-device licensing means multi-sensor and multi-imager cameras consume several licences each, so a headline camera count badly understates the true licence cost of a modern design.
  • It is Windows only for servers and needs a properly designed server and storage architecture, so the software price is a fraction of a project that also needs recording servers, storage and an integrator.
  • Complexity requires trained staff or a certified integrator; organisations that install it without either end up running a large deployment on default settings and never using the features they paid for.
  • Milestone retired Kite from its portfolio in favour of Arcules from January 2025, which stranded buyers who had standardised on Kite and is a reminder that the cloud side of the portfolio has changed direction more than once.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is XProtect really free for small sites?

Essential+ is free for up to eight cameras with no recording time limit, but it comes with no vendor support and no multi-server capability.

Are licences perpetual or annual?

Device licences are perpetual. The annual cost is Care Plus, the support and software update contract, which you need to stay on current versions.

What happens if I do not renew Care Plus?

The system keeps recording, but you stop getting version upgrades, and over a few years that blocks you from adding newer cameras.

Who owns Milestone?

Canon. The portfolio also includes BriefCam analytics and Arcules cloud video, with Arcules replacing Milestone Kite from January 2025.
