As of 31 August 2026, Meltano is free to use. Meltano is a command-line data integration tool that turns Singer taps and targets into version-controlled pipeline projects. Softwr lists it under Automation Integration. Meltano is made by Matatika (steward of the Meltano project), available on Linux, macOS, Docker, Windows (via WSL).

What Meltano does
Meltano wraps the Singer specification, an open protocol for data extractors (taps) and loaders (targets), in a project structure with a YAML config file, environment separation, plugin management, state tracking and scheduling hooks. You declare which taps and targets you want, run meltano install, and get a pipeline you can commit to Git and run anywhere Python runs. It also orchestrates dbt transformations and can drive Airflow or Dagster. The distinguishing property is that connectors are commodity components you can fork. Singer has hundreds of community taps, and when one is broken or missing a field you can patch it yourself, which is not an option with a closed SaaS connector where you file a ticket and wait. Combined with per-run cost of zero, that makes Meltano attractive to teams with unusual sources or with data volumes that make per-row pricing painful. The critical caveat is corporate. Meltano began at GitLab, spun out, pivoted the commercial product to Arch after retiring Meltano Cloud, and Arch was acquired by Matatika in December 2025 as the company wound down. The open source project continues under Matatika stewardship. Buyers should treat Meltano as a maintained open source tool with a small commercial backer rather than a venture-funded platform, and should be honest that connector quality across the Singer ecosystem is uneven, with many community taps unmaintained.

- The company behind Meltano wound down in December 2025 and the project was transferred to Matatika, a much smaller organisation, so roadmap velocity and the size of the maintenance team are now materially lower than the tool's reputation suggests.
- Singer connector quality varies enormously; a tap may be maintained, abandoned, or maintained only for the subset of endpoints its original author needed, and you will not know which until a schema change breaks a load at 3am.
- There is no managed hosting from the project itself, so someone on your team owns scheduling, secrets, retries, alerting and upgrades, which is real headcount that a per-row SaaS bill was buying for you.
- It is command-line and YAML first with no meaningful web interface, so analysts who are not comfortable in Git and a terminal cannot maintain pipelines themselves.
- Debugging spans three layers, the tap, Meltano itself and the target, and each has its own logging conventions, so failures often require reading Python source in a third-party connector.
