Slack: If your team is distributed internationally and you need the large third-party app ecosystem

Korean business messaging built on the KakaoTalk interface for domestic enterprise teams
As of 31 August 2026, Kakao Work has a free plan and paid plans start at 2400/month. A work chat and collaboration suite from Kakao Enterprise that deliberately mirrors KakaoTalk so Korean staff need no training. Softwr lists it under Communication. Kakao Work is made by Kakao Enterprise, available on Web, Windows, macOS, iOS.
Overview
Kakao Work is business messaging, video meetings, shared drive, calendar and workflow approvals from Kakao Enterprise, the B2B arm of Kakao. The interface is a close copy of KakaoTalk, the consumer messenger that dominates Korean phones, which is the entire product thesis: staff already know how to use it, so the change management cost of moving off consumer KakaoTalk for work is close to zero. The distinguishing feature is compliance-shaped rather than technical. Korean organisations widely use consumer KakaoTalk for work chat, which puts company records on personal accounts outside any retention or audit control. Kakao Work exists to pull that traffic into an administered tenant with organisation charts synced from HR, admin-controlled message retention, and access logs, without asking anyone to learn a new interaction model. That is a narrower and more defensible pitch than competing on features with Slack. Buyers are Korean enterprises, public bodies and mid-sized firms, especially those with a large non-desk workforce. The trade-off is reach. Documentation, support and the integration catalogue are Korea-first, the third-party app ecosystem is small compared with Slack or Teams, and a company with offices outside Korea will find its overseas staff on a different tool. Prices are published in Korean won and the plan structure was revised in July 2026.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Kakao Work.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Technically yes, and the app supports several interface languages, but support, billing and the integration catalogue assume a Korean entity. Most non-Korean buyers should not.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Kakao Work, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
