What Decodable does
Decodable is a hosted platform for real-time data movement and transformation. It manages connections, which read from or write to systems such as Kafka, Postgres change data capture, Kinesis, S3, Snowflake and Elasticsearch, and pipelines, which transform streams using SQL or custom Apache Flink jobs in Java or Python. Underneath it is Flink and Debezium, operated by Decodable rather than by you, including checkpointing, state backends, connector version upgrades and scaling. The pricing model is the distinguishing detail and worth understanding before comparison shopping. Work is measured in tasks: each connection or pipeline has at least one, more with parallelism, and a task consumes one credit an hour at small size, two at medium and four at large. Credits are 0.12 US dollars on the On Demand plan and 0.10 on Enterprise. Usage is sampled every minute and billed as an hourly average, and only active resources are charged. A single small always-on task therefore costs roughly 86 dollars a month. The free plan allows four concurrent tasks with 24 hour, 10 GB stream retention, which is enough to run a genuine pilot rather than a demo. The buyer is a data team that has concluded self-managed Flink is not worth the headcount. The honest trade off is lock-in of operational knowledge rather than of data: the SQL and Flink jobs are portable, but the connector configuration, the schema handling and the operational tooling are Decodable’s, and rebuilding that on self-managed Flink later is a project.

- Credit pricing rewards intermittent work and penalises always-on pipelines: a single small task running continuously costs roughly 86 US dollars a month before any parallelism.
- Parallelism multiplies tasks, so scaling a pipeline to keep up with throughput multiplies the bill in a way that is easy to under-forecast at design time.
- The free tier retains streams for only 24 hours, which is too short to debug an intermittent failure that surfaces days later.
- Java and Python transformations are gated behind paid plans, so anything the SQL layer cannot express means moving off the free tier immediately.
- The operational layer is proprietary even though Flink and Debezium are not, so migrating to self-managed Flink later means rebuilding connectors, schema handling and monitoring from scratch.
