What Cesium ion does

Cesium ion is the hosted service from Cesium, the company behind CesiumJS and the 3D Tiles specification now standardised by the OGC. You upload photogrammetry, point clouds, CAD, BIM and terrain data, ion tiles it into 3D Tiles, and serves it to CesiumJS, Cesium for Unreal, Cesium for Unity or any 3D Tiles client. It also brokers global base layers including terrain, imagery and Google Photorealistic 3D Tiles, and offers cloud reality modelling that reconstructs meshes from uploaded photographs. The pricing model is what a buyer needs to understand, because it is metered in several units at once. Community is free with 5 GB storage, 15 GB a month of streaming and 20 gigapixels a month of reality modelling. Commercial is $149 a month for an individual or $524 for a team, with 50 GB storage, 150 GB monthly streaming and 40 gigapixels. Premium is $499 individual or $874 team, with 250 GB, 500 GB monthly streaming and 100 gigapixels. Additional meters cover reality analysis hours, geocodes and Google 3D Tiles root tile requests. A public-facing application with unpredictable traffic can therefore hit a streaming limit for reasons unrelated to how much data it stores. Buyers are simulation, defence, urban planning, infrastructure and geospatial software teams building 3D applications, plus surveyors who want to deliver a browser-viewable model to a client. The free Community tier is genuinely free but requires that your use be non-commercial or open, and self-hosting ion inside your own environment is available only under a custom enterprise agreement.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Cesium ion.

Streaming is metered in gigabytes a month, so a public-facing application's cost is driven by visitor traffic you do not control, and a successful launch can blow through a tier immediately.
Reality modelling is billed in gigapixels a month, an unfamiliar unit that makes it hard to estimate in advance how many drone flights a plan will actually cover.
The free Community tier is restricted to non-commercial or open use, so a consultancy sharing a model with a paying client does not qualify regardless of how small the dataset is.
Team accounts cost substantially more than individual ones at the same quota, $524 against $149 on Commercial, so adding a second colleague is a large step rather than an incremental seat charge.
Self-hosting is available only under a custom enterprise agreement, which leaves organisations with data residency or air-gap requirements out of the published tiers entirely.
