Fast, cost-effective time series database for metrics

The short version
- Each has a real cost: Kustomize no packaging or distribution story, which is exactly what Helm charts provide; VictoriaMetrics promQL compatibility is very close but not identical, and MetricsQL extensions do not port back
- They diverge on capability: Kustomize covers Overlay patching, VictoriaMetrics covers PromQL compatible.

Kustomize
- Managing dev, staging and production variants of the same manifestsnot VictoriaMetrics
- Keeping manifests readable and directly applyable rather than templatednot VictoriaMetrics
- Patching third-party manifests without forking themnot VictoriaMetrics
VictoriaMetrics
- Keeping months or years of Prometheus metrics without the memory costnot Kustomize
- High-cardinality metrics where Prometheus strugglesnot Kustomize
- Consolidating metrics from many Prometheus instances into one queryable storenot Kustomize
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Kustomize
- No packaging or distribution story, which is exactly what Helm charts provide
- Deeply nested overlays become hard to follow, and reasoning about the final output requires building it
- No release lifecycle: nothing tracks what is installed or supports rollback the way Helm does
- Patch syntax is fiddly for anything beyond simple field replacement
VictoriaMetrics
- PromQL compatibility is very close but not identical, and MetricsQL extensions do not port back
- Smaller community than Prometheus, so fewer guides and third-party integrations
- The clustered version has meaningfully more moving parts than the single binary suggests
- Some enterprise features sit outside the open-source offering

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Kustomize: Is Kustomize free?
Yes, open source and part of the Kubernetes project.
VictoriaMetrics: Is VictoriaMetrics free?
The open-source version is free with no data limits. An enterprise edition and cloud service are paid.
Kustomize: Kustomize or Helm?
Kustomize patches plain YAML and keeps bases readable; Helm templates and packages applications with a release lifecycle. Many teams use both — Helm to install third-party charts, Kustomize to patch them.
VictoriaMetrics: Does it replace Prometheus?
It can, but most teams keep Prometheus for scraping and use VictoriaMetrics as the long-term store behind it.
Kustomize: Do I need to install Kustomize?
No. It is built into kubectl, available through kubectl apply -k.
VictoriaMetrics: Is PromQL fully supported?
Very nearly. It implements PromQL and extends it with MetricsQL, though a small number of edge-case behaviours differ.
