Kafka-compatible streaming platform with no ZooKeeper or JVM

The short version
- Each has a real cost: HAProxy configuration syntax is dense and unforgiving, with a steep initial learning curve; Redpanda the community edition is source-available rather than OSI open source, which matters for some procurement
- They diverge on capability: HAProxy covers High throughput, Redpanda covers Kafka API compatible.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 29 August 2026.
Where they differ
Only the attributes on which HAProxy and Redpanda actually diverge.
Identical on both: starting price (Free), free tier (Yes), platforms (Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Self-hosted), user rating (Not yet rated).

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
HAProxy
- Load balancing at traffic levels where proxy efficiency shows up in the hardware billnot Redpanda
- Precise traffic control — rate limits, sticky sessions, complex routing rulesnot Redpanda
- TCP load balancing for databases and non-HTTP servicesnot Redpanda
Redpanda
- Kafka workloads where the operational cost of running Kafka is the blockernot HAProxy
- Latency-sensitive streaming where tail latency mattersnot HAProxy
- Smaller teams wanting streaming without a dedicated platform groupnot HAProxy
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
HAProxy
- Configuration syntax is dense and unforgiving, with a steep initial learning curve
- No automatic certificate management, unlike newer servers that treat it as default behaviour
- The built-in stats page is basic, so real observability needs exporters and dashboards
- A dedicated load balancer is more machinery than small deployments need
Redpanda
- The community edition is source-available rather than OSI open source, which matters for some procurement
- Kafka API compatibility is high but not total, and deep ecosystem tools can hit gaps
- Smaller community than Kafka, so fewer people have solved your problem before
- Some operational and tiered-storage features are enterprise-only

Questions people ask
- Is HAProxy or Redpanda better?
- Neither clearly leads. HAProxy starts at Free and Redpanda at Free, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, HAProxy or Redpanda?
- HAProxy starts at Free and Redpanda at Free.
- Does HAProxy or Redpanda run on more platforms?
- Both run on Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Self-hosted, so platform support will not decide this one for you.
- Can I use HAProxy for free?
- Both have a free tier, so you can try either at no cost before committing.
- What is HAProxy best used for?
- HAProxy is most often used for load balancing at traffic levels where proxy efficiency shows up in the hardware bill, precise traffic control — rate limits, sticky sessions, complex routing rules, tcp load balancing for databases and non-http services. Of those, load balancing at traffic levels where proxy efficiency shows up in the hardware bill and precise traffic control — rate limits, sticky sessions, complex routing rules are not what Redpanda is typically brought in for.
- What can HAProxy do that Redpanda cannot?
- HAProxy covers High throughput, Layer 4 and 7, Health checking, Rate limiting and ACLs. Redpanda covers Kafka API compatible, No JVM or ZooKeeper, Thread-per-core, Built-in HTTP proxy and schema registry.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
HAProxy: Is HAProxy free?
Yes, the community version is open source. HAProxy Technologies sells HAProxy Enterprise separately.
Redpanda: Is Redpanda free?
A community edition is free and source-available. Enterprise features and Redpanda Cloud are paid, and the licence is not OSI open source.
HAProxy: HAProxy or Nginx?
HAProxy is a specialist load balancer with deeper balancing and health-check features. Nginx also serves static content and is more approachable, which is why it is more common as a general web server.
Redpanda: Can I use my Kafka clients?
Yes. Redpanda implements the Kafka API, so existing clients and most tooling connect without changes.
HAProxy: Does HAProxy handle TLS certificates automatically?
No. Certificate issuance and renewal are external, unlike Caddy where it is automatic.
Redpanda: Why remove ZooKeeper and the JVM?
Both are significant sources of Kafka’s operational burden — tuning, coordination and failure modes. Removing them is the core of Redpanda’s pitch.
