The short version

  • Each has a real cost: Cascadeur no facial animation tools beyond importing pre-made blend shapes; Photon Engine billing follows peak concurrent users, so a single stream or a launch weekend raises the bill immediately, and studios that cannot forecast concurrency cannot forecast the cost of their own launch.
  • They diverge on capability: Cascadeur covers AI-assisted posing, Photon Engine covers Concurrent user billing.
  • Prices and features above were last checked on 30 August 2026.

Photon Engine

  • Adding multiplayer to a Unity game without hiring a network engineernot Cascadeur
  • Competitive titles needing deterministic rollback rather than state synchronisationnot Cascadeur
  • Games with a large but thinly spread player base, where concurrency stays low and per player pricing would cost morenot Cascadeur
  • Training and simulation projects that need shared real-time state outside gamesnot Cascadeur

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

Cascadeur

  • No facial animation tools beyond importing pre-made blend shapes
  • Designed primarily for humanoid characters; non-humanoid animation has limitations
  • Free plan is non-commercial use only with no export options besides proprietary CASC format
  • Requires per-user licensing for team workflows instead of team seats

Photon Engine

  • Billing follows peak concurrent users, so a single stream or a launch weekend raises the bill immediately, and studios that cannot forecast concurrency cannot forecast the cost of their own launch.
  • Exceeding the band does not degrade gracefully; additional players are refused connections until concurrency falls or the plan is upgraded, which is a visible outage to your players at the worst possible moment.
  • PUN, the product most tutorials and courses still teach, is legacy, so a large share of the learning material available online points new projects at the wrong SDK.
  • Self-hosting is an enterprise arrangement rather than a purchasable licence, so a studio that wants its servers on its own infrastructure for cost or compliance reasons cannot simply buy that.
  • It is a networking layer only; accounts, persistence, leaderboards, inventories and anti-cheat all come from other services, so the multiplayer stack ends up as several vendors rather than one.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

Cascadeur: Can I use Cascadeur on a Mac?

Yes, Cascadeur supports macOS on Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, and later) with macOS 13.3 or later. However, it does not support Intel-based Macs with x86 processors.

Source
Photon Engine: What exactly is a concurrent user?

A player connected to Photon at that moment. Your plan is sized by the peak of that number, not by downloads, registered accounts or monthly actives.

Cascadeur: What file formats can I export animations in?

Cascadeur exports to FBX, DAE, USD, GLB, and GLTF formats. The Free plan only exports the proprietary CASC format, while Indie and Pro plans unlock standard interchange formats for compatibility with other software.

Source
Photon Engine: Which product should a new project use?

Fusion for most real-time games, Quantum where determinism matters such as fighting and competitive titles. PUN is legacy and should not start a new project despite the volume of tutorials.

Cascadeur: Does Cascadeur work with Unreal Engine and Unity?

Yes. Cascadeur integrates with both through standard FBX/DAE export and direct import workflows. Unreal Engine 5.5-5.8 also has a dedicated Live Link plugin for real-time animation streaming from Cascadeur.

Source
Photon Engine: Does it work outside Unity?

Unity is the first-class target. Unreal and other engines are supported through Realtime SDKs with less coverage and slower feature parity.

Cascadeur: Can I animate faces and facial expressions?

Cascadeur has limited facial animation support. You can import blend shapes for facial morphs but cannot create them directly in the software. Full facial rigging and creation remain on the development roadmap.

Source
Cascadeur: What is the difference between the Free, Indie, and Pro plans?

Free includes core animation tools but limits exports to CASC format and non-commercial use. Indie ($29/month annual, $70/month monthly) adds FBX/DAE/USD export and commercial rights. Pro ($121/month annual, $180/month monthly) includes retargeting, scene linking, and priority support.

Source
Cascadeur: Is there a mobile version of Cascadeur?

Yes. Cascadeur Mobile is available on iOS and Android. The Android version was released in October 2025 and includes full Pro features, arriving ten months after the iOS launch.
