The short version
- Each has a real cost: Axure RP a large prototype with variables and repeaters is effectively an application, but it has no version control diffing, no tests and no code review, so maintaining one for years is a genuine engineering cost carried by a designer.; Cadence Allegro cadence publishes no prices; resellers quote Allegro X from roughly $5,700 per seat per year on lease or about $18,000 perpetual with support, so the entry cost is several times a mainstream PCB tool and budget approval usually needs a business case.
- They diverge on capability: Axure RP covers Conditional logic, Cadence Allegro covers Constraint Manager.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Axure RP
- Specifying an interface precisely enough that an external development contractor can build it without follow-up questionsnot Cadence Allegro
- Prototyping a data-heavy administrative screen where sorting, filtering and pagination must behave realistically in testingnot Cadence Allegro
- Working in an environment where prototypes may not be published to a vendor cloudnot Cadence Allegro
- Documenting conditional business rules in a form both designers and business analysts can reviewnot Cadence Allegro
Cadence Allegro
- Routing a DDR5 or high-speed SerDes board where length matching and impedance rules must be enforced during layout, not checked afterwardsnot Axure RP
- A rigid-flex design with multiple stackups that a general-purpose PCB tool cannot represent correctlynot Axure RP
- A team of PCB designers working concurrently on partitions of one large backplanenot Axure RP
- An organisation that already runs Sigrity or Clarity analysis and wants the layout constraints and the simulation to share one rule setnot Axure RP
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Axure RP
- A large prototype with variables and repeaters is effectively an application, but it has no version control diffing, no tests and no code review, so maintaining one for years is a genuine engineering cost carried by a designer.
- The Windows and macOS builds have historically differed in behaviour and file handling, which causes conversion problems in mixed teams.
- The output is never production code, so every rule you carefully modelled is reimplemented from scratch by engineers, and the two versions then diverge.
- Subscription replaced the perpetual licence at RP 10, so teams that bought RP 9 outright must now pay annually to receive any new major version.
- The visual design tooling is dated next to Figma, so most teams design elsewhere and import, which leaves two sources of truth to keep aligned.
Cadence Allegro
- Cadence publishes no prices; resellers quote Allegro X from roughly $5,700 per seat per year on lease or about $18,000 perpetual with support, so the entry cost is several times a mainstream PCB tool and budget approval usually needs a business case.
- The learning curve is steep and the interface carries decades of accumulated convention, so a designer coming from another tool needs weeks to become productive and formal training is effectively mandatory.
- Capability is split across product tiers and add-ons, so the feature you assumed was in Allegro may be an extra SKU, and the quoted configuration deserves a line-by-line check against your actual requirements.
- Perpetual licences still carry annual maintenance to stay on current releases, and lapsing maintenance means paying to rejoin later, so the perpetual option is only cheaper over a long horizon.
- Library and part data management is a project in its own right; teams that treat it as an afterthought end up with inconsistent footprints that surface as manufacturing defects rather than design errors.

Questions people ask
- Is Axure RP or Cadence Allegro better?
- Neither clearly leads. Axure RP starts at On request and Cadence Allegro at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Axure RP or Cadence Allegro?
- Axure RP starts at On request and Cadence Allegro at On request.
- Does Axure RP or Cadence Allegro run on more platforms?
- Axure RP runs on Windows, macOS, Web. Cadence Allegro runs on Windows, Linux.
- What is Axure RP best used for?
- Axure RP is most often used for specifying an interface precisely enough that an external development contractor can build it without follow-up questions, prototyping a data-heavy administrative screen where sorting, filtering and pagination must behave realistically in testing, working in an environment where prototypes may not be published to a vendor cloud, documenting conditional business rules in a form both designers and business analysts can review. Of those, specifying an interface precisely enough that an external development contractor can build it without follow-up questions and prototyping a data-heavy administrative screen where sorting, filtering and pagination must behave realistically in testing are not what Cadence Allegro is typically brought in for.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Axure RP: Can I still buy a perpetual licence?
No. Axure moved to subscription with RP 10. Existing perpetual licences keep working but do not receive new major versions.
Cadence Allegro: Can I still buy a perpetual Allegro licence?
Yes. Cadence channel partners quote both annual lease and perpetual licences for Allegro X, with perpetual starting around $18,000 including support. OrCAD X is more commonly sold as lease only.
Axure RP: Can prototypes be hosted on our own servers?
Yes. Prototypes export as a self-contained HTML bundle, and Axure Cloud for Business can be deployed on customer infrastructure.
Cadence Allegro: How does Allegro differ from OrCAD?
OrCAD X is schematic capture and mainstream PCB layout; Allegro X is the high-speed implementation environment with the full constraint manager. They share a database, so moving up does not mean redrawing.
Axure RP: Is it worth it if we already use Figma?
Only if you need conditional logic, data-bound components or generated specifications. For click-through review of static screens it adds cost without adding capability.
Cadence Allegro: Is there a free or student version?
Cadence offers time-limited evaluation and academic programmes, but there is no free commercial tier.
Cadence Allegro: Do I need Sigrity as well?
Only if you need signal or power integrity simulation. Allegro enforces constraints but does not simulate; Sigrity is a separate purchase.
