Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Avathon
- The company rebranded from SparkCognition to Avathon and narrowed its focus after repeated reported layoff rounds, so reference checks and roadmap commitments made under the old name need reconfirming.
- Headcount is in the low hundreds against a product portfolio spanning renewables, vision, predictive maintenance and document AI, which is thin coverage per product line for enterprise support expectations.
- Model accuracy depends on having enough labelled historical failures, and sites with short data history or poor maintenance record-keeping get generic anomaly detection rather than useful failure prediction.
- Nothing is published about pricing or asset-count thresholds, so there is no way to judge whether a small fleet is even a viable customer without entering a sales cycle.
- It sits on top of your SCADA and CMMS rather than replacing them, so the integration and asset-hierarchy mapping work is a real project cost that the software subscription does not cover.
Writer
- Pricing is not publicly disclosed and requires a sales conversation, unlike consumer AI writing tools.
- Its proprietary Palmyra models are less widely benchmarked and documented than general-purpose models like GPT or Claude.
- Primarily positioned for large enterprises, making it less accessible or cost-effective for individuals and small teams.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Avathon: Is this the same company as SparkCognition?
Yes. SparkCognition rebranded to Avathon and refocused on industrial and government asset AI.
Writer: What does Writer cost?
Writer does not publish prices. There are two tiers: Starter, for teams up to five users, with a 14-day free trial and no card required, and Enterprise, which is contact-sales and adds unlimited users and teams.
SourceAvathon: Which product is most mature?
The renewable energy suite for wind and solar underperformance, which has the longest production deployment history.
Writer: What is the difference between Pro and Lite seats?
Pro is the standard paid seat, with full access to create, customise and automate workflows. Lite seats exist only on Enterprise, letting invited users view and run existing playbooks with limited monthly Agent use before needing a Pro seat.
SourceAvathon: Does it need my historian data in the cloud?
Generally yes for model training and ongoing scoring, which is a security review item for utility and defence customers.
Writer: What does Writer do with customer data?
Writer states a zero data retention approach and says customers retain full ownership of their data. By default it does not train or improve its models on customer data, rather than requiring an opt-out.
SourceAvathon: Can it work without historical failure records?
It will still do anomaly detection, but failure prediction models need labelled historical failures to be worth the deployment cost.
Writer: Which compliance standards does Writer meet?
Writer says it adheres to GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II and PCI. HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II certifications and reports are available on request, and only for Enterprise plans.
SourceWriter: Are there discounts for nonprofits or education?
Yes. Writer offers 20% off the Starter and Enterprise plans to nonprofits and educational institutions, claimed by emailing from a nonprofit or .edu address.
