Caterpillar MineStar: A Caterpillar fleet with a committed path to Cat autonomy and integrated Cat equipment data

Fleet management and dispatch for open-pit mines, sold on an explicit open interoperability stance
As of 30 August 2026, Wenco's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. The third of the three real fleet management vendors, and the only one that markets openness as its position rather than an OEM ecosystem. Softwr lists it under Mining. Wenco is made by Wenco International Mining Systems, available on Windows, Web.
Overview
Wenco supplies fleet management systems for surface mining: truck and shovel dispatch, machine guidance, asset health monitoring, asset management, safety technology, reporting and analytics, and a stockpile management product. The company has operated for more than 40 years and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. The commercially important fact is the market structure. Mine fleet management is effectively a three-vendor market, and each vendor sits under an equipment manufacturer: Modular Mining under Komatsu, MineStar under Caterpillar and Wenco as a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery. Wenco is the smallest of the three and differentiates on open interoperability, publishing a position it calls a vision for open autonomy that argues against closed vendor models on the path to full autonomy. For a mine running a mixed fleet, that stance is the entire reason to look at Wenco, because the alternative is dispatch tightly coupled to one manufacturer of trucks. The caveat a buyer should state out loud is that Wenco is itself owned by an equipment manufacturer, so the openness commitment is a strategy rather than a structural guarantee. The buyers are open-pit mines, principally in coal, iron ore, copper and gold, that already run mixed equipment or intend to. The trade-offs are operational rather than functional. A fleet management deployment is a capital project involving in-pit wireless coverage, hardware on every truck and shovel, and a staffed dispatch control room; the software licence is a small proportion of it. The payback comes entirely from someone actively running dispatch, so mines that install the system and leave it unattended lose the benefit. Underground coverage is weaker than surface, so operations running both usually end up with two systems.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Wenco.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Hitachi Construction Machinery. It is a wholly owned subsidiary based in Vancouver.
Yes, and mixed fleet support is the main reason mines shortlist it. Verify the specific interfaces for your equipment during evaluation rather than assuming.
Coverage is much weaker than surface. Underground operations usually select a different system.
No. It is quoted per site by fleet size, modules and the hardware and network work involved.
