Tesla owner app for remote vehicle control, charging and account management, useless without a Tesla

As of 1 September 2026, Tesla is free to use. The companion app for Tesla vehicle owners, controlling climate, charging, locks and location remotely. Softwr lists it under Automotive. Tesla is made by Tesla, Inc., available on iOS, Android.

Overview

What Tesla does

The Tesla app lets an owner remotely precondition cabin climate, lock and unlock doors, check charge state and range, locate the car, summon it in a parking space (where equipped), and manage software updates, service appointments and Supercharging payment. It also handles account and vehicle key management, and integrates with the Tesla solar and Powerwall products for owners who have those too. The defining constraint is that it is entirely hardware bound: there is nothing to use the app for without owning or leasing a Tesla vehicle, unlike most consumer apps which have some standalone value. On top of that, Tesla splits connectivity into a free Standard Connectivity tier, which is limited largely to over-the-air software updates and basic connectivity, and a paid Premium Connectivity subscription, priced at 9.99 USD a month or included for the vehicle's first several years on some models, which is required for live traffic-based navigation, streaming media, live camera viewing and satellite-view maps. Which specific features fall behind Premium Connectivity has changed with different model years and firmware updates. Buyers are simply Tesla owners, since the app is mandatory rather than optional for basic tasks like using a phone as a car key on some models. The trade-off is that owners are locked into whatever remote feature set and subscription structure Tesla chooses at any given time, since none of it is available through third party alternatives.

What people use it for

  • A Tesla owner preconditioning the cabin before getting in on a cold or hot day
  • An owner using the phone as the car key instead of carrying a separate fob or card
  • Checking charge state and Supercharger availability before a road trip
  • Scheduling a service visit or monitoring an over-the-air software update remotely

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Tesla.

  • It is entirely hardware bound; there is no function for anyone who does not own or lease a Tesla, so it cannot be evaluated as standalone software.
  • Some remote features that owners of other connected cars get included, such as live traffic navigation and live camera viewing, sit behind the paid Premium Connectivity subscription on many vehicles.
  • Which features are free versus paid has changed across model years and firmware versions, so what a new owner reads online may not match what their specific car actually gets.
  • Phone-as-key relies on the phone's Bluetooth and battery; a dead phone or Bluetooth fault can leave an owner needing the physical key card as a backup.
  • App outages, which Tesla has had periodically, can temporarily remove remote access to features like climate preconditioning and vehicle locating that owners have come to depend on.
