As of 30 August 2026, RapidMiner is free to use. RapidMiner builds data preparation and modelling as a connected diagram of operators rather than as code. Softwr lists it under Machine Learning. RapidMiner is made by Altair (RapidMiner), launched in 2007, available on Linux, macOS, Windows, Web.
Overview
RapidMiner is a data science platform built around a visual process: you place operators on a canvas, connect their inputs and outputs, and the resulting diagram performs data loading, cleaning, feature construction, modelling and validation. Python and R operators are available where code is genuinely needed. Altair acquired the product in 2022 and renamed the desktop tool AI Studio, with the server component sold as AI Hub, licensed through Altair's shared units model alongside the rest of its engineering software portfolio. Altair has since been acquired by Siemens, which places the product inside its second parent company in three years. The distinguishing property is that the process is readable by people who cannot read code. In engineering and regulated settings where a model has to be explained to a reviewer who will never open a Python file, a diagram showing where the data was split, what was transformed and how the result was validated carries more weight than a cleaner implementation nobody in the room can audit. That is why the visual approach persisted against free code tools, and it is why the buyer is often an engineering or business function rather than a data science group. It is used by manufacturing and engineering organisations, frequently ones already holding Altair licences, and by teaching institutions. The trade-off is portability. Processes are stored as the product's own XML, so they cannot be reviewed in a pull request, diffed sensibly or run anywhere else, and years of accumulated work do not leave with the team that built it. The operator set is also the ceiling: past it you are writing Python inside a tool whose entire premise was not writing Python, and getting anything into production requires AI Hub as a separate installation and a separate licence.

The desktop product is now Altair AI Studio and the server is Altair AI Hub. The RapidMiner name persists in documentation, community material and most search results, which makes finding current information harder than it should be.
Altair has offered free and academic editions with usage limits, but the terms have moved with each ownership change, so check what is currently on offer rather than relying on what the free tier allowed a few years ago.
