What Ant Design does
Ant Design is a React implementation of a design language created inside Ant Group, the Alibaba affiliate behind Alipay. It covers the usual component range but is distinguished by its data components: the table supports virtual scrolling, nested rows, column resizing, filtering and editable cells out of the box, and the form component handles validation, dynamic fields and nested structures without a separate library. It is MIT licensed with sibling implementations for Vue and Angular maintained by the community. For the buyer, the useful fact is who maintains it. A UI library is chosen once and lived with for years, and Ant Design is staffed by a large company that uses it internally at scale, which is a different continuity profile from a library driven by one person's evenings. The counterpart is that the design language reflects Chinese enterprise conventions in density, colour and interaction, and a portion of the surrounding ecosystem, issues and articles is written in Chinese. Neither is a defect; both are facts a European or American team should notice before adopting. The practical trade offs are weight and rendering. The package is large and awkward to tree shake fully, which matters for public facing pages and matters much less for authenticated back office tools where it is nearly always used. Version five moved styling to a CSS in JavaScript runtime, which brought dynamic theming but complicated server side rendering setups. Accessibility conformance is weaker than libraries built on Radix or React Aria primitives, which is the point to check first if you are procuring against a public sector requirement.
