SST vs Podman
The short version
- Each has a real cost: SST primarily optimized for AWS with Cloudflare support; Podman native support is Linux-first; macOS and Windows run containers inside a managed virtual machine, which adds a layer Docker Desktop users may not expect
- They diverge on capability: SST covers Single config file, Podman covers Daemonless architecture.
Where they differ
Only the attributes on which SST and Podman actually diverge.
Identical on both: starting price (Free), free tier (Yes), user rating (Not yet rated), category (Cloud).
What each one covers
Drawn from each product's published feature list. An absence here means we hold no record of it - not that the product lacks it.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
SST
- Deploying Next.js frontends with serverless backendsnot Podman
- Managing databases and storage alongside application codenot Podman
- Creating staging environments for feature testingnot Podman
Podman
- Running containers on hosts where a root daemon is not acceptablenot SST
- Replacing Docker on Linux without retraining a team on new commandsnot SST
- Managing containers as systemd services on a single servernot SST
- Building locally in a way that maps onto Kubernetes podsnot SST
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
SST
- Primarily optimized for AWS with Cloudflare support
- Learning curve for developers unfamiliar with infrastructure concepts
- Limited documentation for some advanced use cases
Podman
- Native support is Linux-first; macOS and Windows run containers inside a managed virtual machine, which adds a layer Docker Desktop users may not expect
- Docker Compose support arrives through a compatibility layer rather than natively, and complex Compose files can hit gaps
- Rootless mode has real constraints around privileged ports and some storage drivers
- Smaller ecosystem of tutorials and third-party integrations than Docker, so unusual problems have fewer existing answers

- You work on AWS, Cloudflare, Node.js.
- You also want resource linking.
Choose Podman if
- You need daemonless architecture.
- You want to start without paying.
- You work on Linux, macOS, Windows.
- You also want rootless containers.
Questions people ask
- Is SST or Podman better?
- Neither clearly leads. SST starts at Free and Podman at Free, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, SST or Podman?
- SST starts at Free and Podman at Free.
- Does SST or Podman run on more platforms?
- SST runs on AWS, Cloudflare, Node.js. Podman runs on Linux, macOS, Windows.
- Can I use SST for free?
- Both have a free tier, so you can try either at no cost before committing.
- What is SST best used for?
- SST is most often used for deploying next.js frontends with serverless backends, managing databases and storage alongside application code, creating staging environments for feature testing. Of those, deploying next.js frontends with serverless backends and managing databases and storage alongside application code are not what Podman is typically brought in for.
- What can SST do that Podman cannot?
- SST covers Single config file, Resource linking, Local development, Multi-cloud support. Podman covers Daemonless architecture, Rootless containers, Docker-compatible CLI, Pods.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
SST: Is SST free?
Yes, SST is open source and free. You only pay for cloud resources from AWS and other providers.
SourcePodman: Is Podman free?
Yes. Podman is open source with no licence fee, for personal or commercial use.
SST: What cloud providers does SST support?
SST supports over 150 providers through built-in AWS and Cloudflare components, plus Pulumi and Terraform providers.
SourcePodman: Can Podman replace Docker?
For most everyday use, yes. The CLI is deliberately Docker-compatible and many teams alias docker to podman. Gaps appear mainly around Docker Compose and Docker Desktop-specific features.
Podman: What does daemonless actually mean?
Docker runs a central background service as root that owns every container. Podman does not: each container is a child process of the user who ran it, so containers can run without root privileges at all.
Podman: Does Podman work on macOS?
Yes, but through a managed Linux virtual machine, because containers are a Linux kernel feature. That is the same approach Docker Desktop takes.
