- Fewer conveniences than minikube: no addon system, so ingress and metrics need manual installation

K3s: Is K3s free?
Yes. K3s is open source with no licence fee. SUSE sells commercial support around Rancher separately.
kind: Is kind free?
Yes, open source and maintained under Kubernetes SIGs.
K3s: Is K3s real Kubernetes?
Yes. It is CNCF-certified conformant, so standard manifests, kubectl and Helm charts work without modification.
kind: Why run Kubernetes nodes as containers?
Speed and cost. A container node starts in seconds and uses far less memory than a virtual machine, which is what makes per-CI-run clusters realistic.
K3s: Why is K3s smaller than Kubernetes?
It strips legacy, alpha and in-tree cloud provider code, packages everything as one binary, and defaults to SQLite instead of etcd.
kind: Is kind suitable for production?
No. It is a development and testing tool, and node isolation is weaker than real nodes because containers share the host kernel.
K3s: Can K3s run in production?
Yes, and it does, particularly at the edge and for small clusters. For a highly available control plane you need to move off the SQLite default to etcd or an external datastore.
