The short version
- Each has a real cost: containerd not a developer-facing tool: there is no build command and the CLI is deliberately minimal, so it needs companions like nerdctl or Buildah; GitHub acquired by Microsoft in 2018, reducing pure independence despite operational autonomy
- They diverge on capability: containerd covers Full container lifecycle, GitHub covers Git repositories.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 30 August 2026.

Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
containerd
- Not a developer-facing tool: there is no build command and the CLI is deliberately minimal, so it needs companions like nerdctl or Buildah
- Debugging is lower-level than Docker, and error messages assume knowledge of the runtime internals
- Documentation is aimed at platform engineers, so newcomers usually find Docker or Podman material more useful
- No image building at all — that is out of scope by design
GitHub
- Acquired by Microsoft in 2018, reducing pure independence despite operational autonomy
- Primary focus on source control differs from purpose-built project management tools like Jira
- Pricing for enterprise features and private repositories adds up compared to some self-hosted alternatives

Questions people ask
- Is containerd or GitHub better?
- Neither clearly leads. containerd starts at Free and GitHub at Free, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, containerd or GitHub?
- containerd starts at Free and GitHub at Free.
- Does containerd or GitHub run on more platforms?
- containerd runs on Linux, Windows. GitHub runs on Web, Desktop, Mobile.
- Can I use containerd for free?
- Both have a free tier, so you can try either at no cost before committing.
- What is containerd best used for?
- containerd is most often used for running the container runtime under a kubernetes cluster after the docker shim removal, building a platform or paas that needs to execute containers, reducing the moving parts on nodes that only ever run kubernetes workloads, embedding container execution inside another product. Of those, running the container runtime under a kubernetes cluster after the docker shim removal and building a platform or paas that needs to execute containers are not what GitHub is typically brought in for.
- What can containerd do that GitHub cannot?
- containerd covers Full container lifecycle, CRI support, OCI compliant, Snapshotter plugins. GitHub covers Git repositories, Pull requests, Code review, Issues & projects.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
containerd: Is containerd free?
Yes. It is an open-source CNCF graduated project with no licence fee.
GitHub: What is a Git repository and how does GitHub use it?
A repository is the centralized database that stores the complete collection of files and folders for a codebase, along with the revision history. GitHub uses Git to provide distributed version control access to repositories with version tracking, branching, and collaboration features.
Sourcecontainerd: Do I need containerd if I use Docker?
You already have it. Docker uses containerd underneath to run containers; it is not an alternative you install separately.
GitHub: How does GitHub authentication work?
When you connect to a GitHub repository from Git, you need to authenticate with GitHub using either HTTPS or SSH. GitHub supports multiple authentication methods including passwords, personal access tokens, SSH keys, and GitHub Apps.
Sourcecontainerd: Why did Kubernetes drop Docker for containerd?
Kubernetes talks to runtimes through the Container Runtime Interface. Docker did not speak CRI natively and needed a shim, so Kubernetes removed the shim and talks to containerd directly, which Docker was already using anyway.
GitHub: How long has GitHub been operating?
GitHub was founded in 2008 and launched publicly on April 10, 2008, making it the dominant git hosting platform for nearly two decades.
Sourcecontainerd: Can containerd build images?
No. Image building is deliberately out of scope. Tools such as Buildah, BuildKit or Docker handle that.
GitHub: Who owns GitHub and when did the acquisition occur?
Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion USD, with the deal announced June 4, 2018 and completed October 26, 2018. GitHub operates as an independent subsidiary within Microsoft.
