Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

BentoML

  • The service interface was reworked between major versions, with the Runner abstraction of the 1.0 and 1.1 line replaced by the service decorator style in 1.2, so older internal services and the majority of tutorials found through search do not run unmodified against a current install.
  • It is Python only, so a model that has to be served from Go, Java or C++, or embedded directly inside an existing application process, falls outside what the framework does.
  • The framework is free but inference is not, and an accelerator held by a service receiving one request a minute costs the same as one running flat out, so utilisation is a problem the packaging layer does not solve for you.
  • Self-hosting at scale means Kubernetes, an autoscaler, a container registry and someone who maintains them, so a small team either takes on that operational load or moves to the vendor's managed platform, where the commercial relationship begins.
  • Batch size, worker count and concurrency limits are tuning parameters with real throughput consequences, and getting them wrong appears as tail latency under load rather than as an error, so it needs someone who will actually run a load test before launch.

DuckDB

  • A database file accepts one read-write process at a time; other processes must open it read-only and will not see subsequent writes, so DuckDB cannot be the shared database behind several services.
  • There is no network protocol, authentication or user management, so exposing it to remote clients means writing and securing your own service around it.
  • It is built for scans and aggregations, not for many small transactions, so a workload of high-frequency single-row inserts and updates performs badly compared with SQLite or Postgres.
  • Storage files are backwards compatible but not forwards compatible, so a file written by a newer version cannot be read by an older one and every consumer of a shared file must be upgraded together.
  • Query memory settings matter: some operations still need to hold significant state, so an under-configured memory limit turns a large join or a high-cardinality aggregation into a spill-heavy query or an out-of-memory failure rather than a slow success.

BentoML: Is BentoML free?

The framework is, under Apache 2.0, and you can run it entirely on your own infrastructure. BentoCloud, the managed platform run by the company, is a paid service billed on the compute it runs for you.

DuckDB: Can multiple applications share one DuckDB database?

Not for writing. One process holds the database read-write; others may attach read-only and will not see later writes. Shared multi-writer access needs a different database or a table format with a catalogue.

BentoML: Do I need Kubernetes?

Not for a single service, which is just a container. You need it once you want autoscaling, multiple models and rolling deployments on your own infrastructure, which is the point at which the managed option starts to look attractive.

DuckDB: Is it a replacement for a data warehouse?

For single-node analytical workloads up to a few hundred gigabytes it very often is. It is not a replacement when many concurrent users need a shared, governed, always-on service.

BentoML: How is this different from just writing a FastAPI app?

For one model it is not very different and FastAPI is simpler. The difference is at four or ten models, where you would otherwise be maintaining ten sets of the same Dockerfile, batching logic, dependency pinning and health check code.

DuckDB: Do I have to load data into it?

No. It queries Parquet, CSV, JSON and Arrow in place, including on object storage. Its own storage format is optional and mainly useful when you want indexes, constraints and faster repeated access.

BentoML: Can it serve large language models?

Yes, and the project publishes tooling aimed at that specifically, but the constraints are the usual ones: accelerator memory, batching strategy and the cost of holding a GPU that is idle between requests.

DuckDB: What is MotherDuck's relationship to it?

MotherDuck is a separate company offering a managed and hybrid service built on the DuckDB engine. DuckDB itself remains MIT-licensed and independent of it, with the IP held by the DuckDB Foundation.

BentoML: What actually is a Bento?

A directory, versioned and archivable, containing your service code, the model files it needs, the exact Python dependencies and instructions for running it. It is the unit you build into an image and deploy.

DuckDB: Is it suitable for OLTP?

No. It is designed for analytical scans. For transactional workloads with frequent small writes, SQLite or Postgres is the right tool.
